INTRODUCTION
This is a funny short story written by Alejandro Roces during his freshman year in Arizona State University. He was well known for his humorous stories. For literature, he was well known for his stories and whit writing. He is known for his widely anthologized "My Brother's peculiar chicken".
The war had just ended in the Philippines and Filipino's lives were almost back to normal. It is a story between a American Soldier who likes to drink whiskey and a Filipino who drinks lambanog. These two men started to drink and the American soldier bragged that they drink all kinds of alcohol but when the Filipino offered Joe, the American soldier a drink of lambanog or Jungle Juice, Joe started to feel so hot as if he was a turtle and started reacting in a peculiar way. The Filipinos don't drink a lot like Americans do, but they sure know how to make them look like fools when they try the Filipino's drinks.

LITERARY LUMINARY

1. "Oh, it is tall and stately. It goes straight up like a skyscraper. It
symbolizes the States."
I pine tree is a great example to represent the United States because just like a pine tree, the United States
of America it stands tall and proud and reaches for the sky.
of America it stands tall and proud and reaches for the sky.
2."The coconut tree represents the Philippines. It stands up to the
sky, but then its leaves sway down to Earth as if remembering the
land that gave it life."
Just like the pine tree, the coconut also stands tall and proud but its leaves seem to never forget to look down to land where they came from, just like the Filipinos in the Philippines.
3. "It just goes to show you that one man's drink is another man's
poison. "
This quotation inspires me because it means that one man's comfort is another man's trouble.
4."It is the custom here always to give back to earth a little of what
we have taken from the earth. "
This is what we should always remember in our hearts, that we need to give back what we had taken even just a little.

'We Filipinos are mild drinkers'
by: Alejandro Roces
Filipinos are mild drinkers. They drink when they are sad, when they are happy and for any other reason. It was in 1945, the war had just ended and drunk American soldiers became a laugh in a small barrio. Joe, an American soldier who likes to drink approached a Filipino farmer and bragged about all the drinks he's had. The FIilipino said, "we Filipinos are mild drinkers". Joe asked if the Farmer drinks at all and the farmer offered him a drink called lambanog. Then they went to the farmers house and started drinking and when Joe drank the lambanog or the jungle juice, he started reacting in a weird way and started talking nonsense about the Filipino farmer being a Japanese who dropped bombs on pearl harbor. The farmer brought Joe back to their camp and they all thanked him for bringing back the American soldiers. Then one soldier at the camp, asked him to have a can of beer but the farmer refused and said, "we Filipinos are mild drinkers."
CHARACTER CAPTAIN
By: Marc Allen Condes
As I have observed, the farmer is nationalistic because he was proud to introduce lambannog, a filipino cultural wire, which can be a substitute for American drinks like whiskey. I can relate the farmer to the Philippine football team 'Azkal' member, Phil Younghusband. although Phil is not 100% Filipino,he is still proud to represent the Philippines to other country. The American soldier, Joe, as I have observed is a bragging kind of person because he bragged that America has many alcoholic drinks.
CONNECTOR
By: Cheridee Hortillosa
I can connect the story 'We Filipinos are mild drinkers' to real life because in reality, Filipinos don't really drink a lot but when they do, they have really strong drinks not like the Americans. Filipinos to me are very strong and brave because they can handle very strong drinks just like in real life, they can handle strong and hard challenges.
